Yvonne Ritter
Yvonne Ritter is known as “Butch” Ritter. On June 27th, 1969, she wanted to go to Stonewall Inn and celebrate her 18th birthday. She was excited to celebrate his birthday, she went to her friends house, to change into his birthday outfit. That night on his birthday, the police went to the Stonewall Inn and raided the place. Once Ritter seen the police, she was terrified for his life and tried to get away from the cops before they seen her.
The police then found her, and they had put her into their van. Once they put Ritter in the car they also got some drag queens, and other people that were inside the inn. While the police were getting more people to put into the van, Ritter quickly got out of the vehicle and ran for her life. When the cops recognized her, they ran after her and once they caught her they put her back into the van. She was trying to tell the cops that all she wanted to do was celebrate her birthday and graduate high school but they didn't care. Their intentions were to just put her in the car and grab as many people out of the in as possible. Leandra Freitas
Dick Leitsch
Dick was packing for a trip and while he was packing for the trip he was listening to the radio, The radio explained how there was trouble in front of a gay bar. Leitsch jumped in a cab but he couldn't get any closer to the bar than 14th street so he got out and walked. Leitsch was an executive director of the Mattachine Society of New York (MSNY) which tried to legitimize being gay by fighting the gay bar raids, fighting employment discrimination and many other reasons.
"We also had this humongous mailing list," explained Dick “but we kept the list under lock and key because everyone was so paranoid about it getting into the wrong hands. If anyone found out you had anything to do with a group like Mattachine, you could be ruined, so people had good reason to be paranoid." Dick finished explaining. Deiona Camara
Raymond Castro
Raymond Castro was one of the participants of the Stonewall Inn. When her seen the cops, he wasn't scared of them. He says, “ I was never afraid of the cops on the street.” He wasn't scared of them due to the fact that he doesn’t publicly show his homosexuality.
On June 27th, 1969, Castro was nervous when the cops came to the Stonewall Inn due to the fact that he didn't have his ID. He thought he’d get arrested by going into a bar without an ID. Once Castro seen everyone running out of the inn, he decided to do the same thing. All that mattered to Castro was quickly getting out of the inn.
Years later, he knew he helped fight for the LGBT communities’ rights. He said he doesn't regret one moment of going to Stonewall Inn. Castro unfortunately died on October 14th, 2010, at the age of 60. He’ll be remembered as the key participant in the Stonewall Riot. Shania Dias
